Whole Health Physical Therapy services in Lynchburg
Whole Health Physical Therapy in Lynchburg, VA, is distinguished by its holistic approach to whole body treatment, as well as reducing pain, healing injuries and restoring functionality. Physical therapist Dr. Beth Rini Scott is keen to determine the source of the problem and find ways to keep problems from happening again.
In addition to treating chronic spine pain and complex spine issues and orthopedic injuries, we offer a number of specialized services.
The holistic approach is evident when, during physical therapy, if it is determined that a patient’s weight or exercise habits may be contributing to a problem, these issues will be addressed. Nutrition and wellness counseling may be offered as well as therapeutic exercises and various breathing techniques for stress management.
Functional Dry Needling
Dry needling is a procedure in which a filament needle is advanced into the muscle in a painful area of the body which typically has a trigger point. The thin needle, upon reaching an active trigger point, can prompt a twitch response to deactivate the painful trigger point. The normal length and function of the muscle involved is restored. Patients generally experience results within two to four treatment sessions, but responses can vary. A doctor’s prescription is needed to receive this specific treatment.
Bones for Life™
Bones for Life™ developed by Ruthy Alon and based on the teachings of Moshe Feldenkrais for the re-education of movement habits, is designed to help patients improve the quality of their moving and posture by gradually experiencing unused options and improved skeletal awareness. The idea is to integrate all body parts in functioning to achieve what Ruthy terms “biological optimism.”
The movement configurations in the Bones for Life program are modeled after the primal patterns of locomotion in nature, patterns that have been proven after millions of years of evolution.
Patients re-learn these basic patterns of walking in a program that is based on the patient’s specific conditions to determine pace and ability. This program is proven to be effective in improving bone density measurements, based on a series of scientific tests.
Functional Movement Screen
Functional Movement Screen is a tool that helps physical therapists identify limitations or asymmetries in seven fundamental movement patterns that are key to functional movement quality. It is used with people who have no current pain complaint or known musculoskeletal injury. This screen is then used to determine the appropriate corrective exercises to improve overall function or performance.
Body Mechanics and Posture and Industry Ergonomics
People suffer when they don’t modify their movement or themselves to their environment. The body mechanics and posture services provided at Whole Health cover everything from helping people avoid pain and injury when they clean their house to labor in their work place or garden.
Whole Health, in addition to assessing body mechanics for people in their home and workplaces, also works on a contract basis to help local industries provide safer workplaces. Working with everyone from Frito-lay to a paper company, dairies, a hospital and even a cardiac surgery team, we ensure that companies help their employees avoid injuries by insuring their workplace design matches their needs.
Treatments and Exercise based on the Feldenkrais Method®
The Feldenkrais Method® is an approach to helping patients increase their range of motion and strength and improve their flexibility and coordination.
It is a form of somatic education that uses gentle movement and directed attention to enhance human function and improve movement.
Through this method, patients can utilize their increased range of motion, flexibility and coordination, to rediscover their innate capacity for graceful, efficient and EASY movement.
The Feldenkrais Method is based on principles of physics, biomechanics and an empirical understanding of learning and human development. It allows our patients an opportunity to live their life more fully, efficiently and comfortably.
Moshe Feldenkrais was one of the first to discuss the concept of neuro-plasticity decades before it became the important topic it is today.

Professional Yoga Therapy (PYT)
As part of its holistic approach to treatment, Whole Health is offering Professional Yoga Therapy also called Medical Therapeutic Yoga (PYT) which is a multifaceted “biopsychosocial” approach to rehabilitation therapy that combines both evidence-based physical therapy and yoga.
PYT applies yoga principles and techniques to specific acute or chronic illnesses or states of disease or imbalance.
When practiced regularly, the benefits are improved muscular strength, endurance, flexibility, balance, postural alignment, body awareness, circulation, digestion, hormonal balance, respiration, immune function, bone strength, normalized blood pressure and reduced or normalized body weight. It can also help with anxiety, depression and other mood disorders.
As a certified nutrition therapist, and when applicable, utilizing her Cornell Certificate in Plant-Based Nutrition, Dr. Beth Rini Scott can help patients with a nutrition evaluation and provide counseling in plant-based or other dietary approaches to weight management and anti-inflammatory nourishment.
